This first evening is dedicated to rest and preparation for the trek. Your guides will conduct a detailed briefing covering the trek itinerary, safety protocols, altitude awareness, and equipment checks. This is an excellent opportunity to get familiar with your trekking gear, meet your support team, and enjoy a calm evening before the physical challenge ahead. Dinner is included at the lodge, offering a chance to fuel up for the days to come. Optional short walks around the lodge property allow you to stretch your legs and start adjusting to the local climate.
After an early breakfast, transfer from Moshi to Shira Gate, the starting point of the trek. Begin your ascent through lush montane forest, surrounded by moss-covered trees and the sounds of birdlife. Trekking for approximately 4–5 hours, you will emerge onto the Shira Plateau at an altitude of about 3,500 meters. Camp on the plateau with spectacular views of volcanic lava cliffs and wide-open plains, a perfect spot for sunset photography and appreciating the unique highland flora. Meals for the day, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, are provided at the campsite.
Today’s trek covers 5–6 hours across the plateau, gradually ascending towards the Shira Cathedral at 3,750 meters. The route passes gentle slopes and volcanic ridges, offering panoramic views of Kibo and Lava Tower in the distance. Along the way, observe unique alpine plants and rare highland wildlife. The campsite at Shira Cathedral provides an excellent vantage point for photography and an evening to relax under the clear mountain skies. Meals for the day are included, and the guides will provide assistance with camp setup and acclimatization tips.
Trekking approximately 6–7 hours, descend into Barranco Valley, passing through moorlands dotted with giant heathers and highland vegetation. The valley is framed by dramatic cliffs, creating a scenic and awe-inspiring environment. Arrive at Barranco Campsite at 3,900 meters, where you will spend the night in tents with comfortable sleeping mats. This descent allows your body to adjust to the altitude while enjoying the unique landscape and spectacular photo opportunities. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.
The trek today takes around 4–5 hours, ascending gradually towards Karanga Valley at 4,000 meters. Cross rolling hills and alpine terrain while enjoying views of glaciers and distant peaks. Enjoy the surrounding scenery and the peaceful high-altitude environment. Meals are provided throughout the day.
Begin your descent back toward the Shira Plateau, trekking 4–5 hours through highland landscapes. Take time to admire the rare alpine plants, lava formations, and panoramic mountain views. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.
On the final day, complete the descent to Mweka Gate over 3–4 hours, reaching an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters.
