What Is the Best Month to Visit Tanzania for a Safari?

What Is the Best Month to Visit Tanzania for a Safari?

So, you’re thinking about a safari in Tanzania. Oh man, good for you. Honestly, it’s one of those trips that just gets under your skin. You know? The kind where you come back, and you can’t stop talking about it. Whether it’s the endless plains of the Serengeti or that first moment you look down into the Ngorongoro Crater and realise it’s absolutely stuffed with animals… It’s pretty special.

But I know what you’re probably asking. Because everyone asks it. When’s the best time to go?

And look, I wish I could give you one simple answer. But it really depends on what’s in your head when you picture this trip. Are you desperate to see the river crossings? That crazy moment when thousands of wildebeest just throw themselves into crocodile-infested water? Or are you more like… I just want to see loads of animals, without a million other jeeps around me. Or maybe you’re watching your budget, or you hate being cold at night. All fair.

The good news? Tanzania is pretty much always good. But some months have their own special something.

Let me quickly explain how it works. There’s a dry season and a wet season. Simple. The dry season is from June to October. The bush gets thinner, water gets scarce, so animals start hanging out around rivers and waterholes. Which means you see them. Easy. The wet season is from November to May. Shorter rains at the end of the year, then heavier rains from March to May. Some people hear “rain” and run away. But honestly? That’s when everything turns this ridiculous shade of green, and the parks feel like they’re just yours.

Okay, so. July.

If you put a gun to my head and said, “Pick one month,” – yeah, July. The weather is just lovely. Warm days, cool nights – perfect for sitting by the campfire with a drink. The animals are gathering around water, so they’re not hard to find. And the Great Migration usually moves through the northern and western Serengeti. Massive herds of wildebeest and zebra, kicking up dust, and right behind them come the lions and hyenas and leopards. It’s like a nature documentary happening right in front of you.

The only catch? Everyone knows July is good. So it’s busy. Book early. Like, months early. Or you might end up somewhere less than ideal.

August is also brilliant. For some people, even better than July. Because this is when the famous Mara River crossings really get going. And let me tell you – watching thousands of wildebeest hurl themselves into a river full of crocodiles is absolutely insane. It’s chaotic, it’s nerve-wracking, it’s beautiful. You’ll be holding your breath without realising it. August stays dry, so wildlife is still everywhere. If river crossings are your dream, August is your month.

Now, don’t ignore September. Please. September is quietly amazing. The water is getting really scarce by now, so animals are packed tight around whatever rivers and waterholes are left. That means predator sightings can be incredible. Lions, leopards, cheetahs – they’re easier to find because their prey has nowhere else to go. And here’s a little secret: the crowds thin out just a tiny bit compared to July and August. Still busy, but slightly less. If you want amazing wildlife without the full-on peak season chaos, September is a gem.

October is what I’d call a hidden treasure. Guides love it. It’s the tail end of the dry season, and animals are really concentrated around permanent water. Some of the best game drives I’ve ever heard about happened in October. In Tarangire, you’ll see elephant herds gathering along the river – literally hundreds of elephants. It’s breathtaking. Yeah, it gets hot. But if you can handle a bit of heat, you’ll be rewarded.

Okay, but what if you love babies? Like, little wobbly newborn animals everywhere? Then January and February are for you. This is calving season in the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu area. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth within a few weeks. Thousands of calves every single day. And of course, where there are babies, there are predators. The lion action can be intense. Photographers absolutely lose their minds over this time – the light is gorgeous, the grass is green, the skies are dramatic. It’s stunning.

And then there’s the green season. March through May. Look, I’ll be straight with you. Some roads get muddy. A few remote camps are closing. But here’s what nobody tells you. The landscape is the most beautiful you’ll ever see. Vibrant green, wildflowers, dramatic clouds. And hardly any other tourists. None. Plus, prices drop like crazy. That fancy lodge that costs a fortune in August? Half price in April. Wildlife is still there, just more spread out because water is everywhere. If you’re on a budget or just want peace, this season can be magical. Honestly.

June is the bridge between the rains and the dry season. Everything is drying out, so spotting animals gets easier. The Migration is starting to move north. Temperatures are comfortable. It’s a really nice time to go if you want great wildlife before the peak crowds hit.

So let me give you the cheat sheet:

  • Want the river crossings? July, August, September.

  • Want predator action? September and October.

  • Want baby animals? January and February.

  • Love birds? November through April.

  • On a budget? March, April, May.

  • First time? July, August, September.

And remember, Tanzania isn’t just the Serengeti. Ngorongoro Crater has animals all year round – they can’t leave, so they’re always there. Tarangire from June to October is elephant heaven. Ruaha in the dry season has amazing predators and hardly any people. Nyerere is fantastic from June to October, especially for boat safaris.

So what’s the best month overall?

If I absolutely had to pick one – July. It just ticks every box. Weather, wildlife, roads, migration, predators. It’s the whole package.

But here’s the real truth. The perfect month is the one that fits what’s in your heart. August for the crossings. February for the newborns. October for animals packed around shrinking waterholes. Or April for green landscapes and silence.

The beautiful thing is this. Tanzania very, very rarely lets you down. Whether you come in the dramatic dry season or the lush, quiet green season, you’ll leave with memories that make you smile for years.

For most people, chasing that classic safari dream? July through October is your golden window.

But honestly? Any month you go, you’ll have the time of your life.
